The re-design of the packaging of olive oil is to specifically cater for those who are suffering from arthritis, ad as well as anyone who suffers from some sort of impairment in the hands, whist yet at the same time not causing a disadvantage to others.  The benefits of olive oil associated with arthritis are that it has the ability to dampen inflammation. The shape of the body itself is shaped ergonomically to allow for it to be easily picked up with one hand.  There are guidelines in place that suggest that if an object were to be picked dup in one hand comfortably it should not have a switch of more than 71mm.  The bottle cap while traditionally a aluminum screw on has to be re-designed into a HDPE nozzle, that is able to shut on and off, through a snap on twisting mechanism.  There are essentially two parts to the mechanism where there is a inner lid and outer.  The inner lid screws on to the bottle while the outer lid snaps onto it. 

The labeling has been designed closely to many suggested guidelines for designing to cater the needs of those with arthritis.  The design manages to be sleek and minimal at the same time.  For important elements such as warnings and instructions, bold characters are used to create contrast in order to highlight its importance.  The use of lower case in combination with upper case and is carefully thought, where the pure use of upper case letters is hard to read.

Weekly Consultation 19/08/13

Feedback from tutor Mar :

The concept is much more refined, and the mechanism is quite pleasing, however i must work on the form quite a bit more.  More specifically i must work on the form on the tab of the mechanism keeping in mind how easily those with arthritis can grasp the tab in between the thumb and knuckle and as well as the form of the bottle keeping in mind that it should most likely be 500ml

Feedback from ZhaoZhao & Anders : 

The concept is quite cool, and the semantics of the shape of the mechanism and bottle does imply food, and especially the shape of the bottle implying olive oil.  I should consider changing the form of the mechanism to incorporate the tab and possibly the spout into the bottle more subtlely.  

Action plan for upcoming week : 

The most important action i must take this week in to fully refine the form, especially in terms of the shape of the tab and possibly the bottle.  I have explored many forms of the bottle especially the round shape, but found that having the round shape has the semantics of alcohol and tried to steer away from this.  I must resolve this in order to complete solidworks in order to get the mechanism 3d printed.

Lifecycle Analysis Reflection

I found the 6 short videos to be extremely insightful in creating awareness of contributing to a greener environment.  The videos proved insightful in conveying multiple strategies that should be implemented in order to help create a greener world.  We must go out of our way as designers to be mindful of the impacts that we are making on the environment at all stages of a products lifecycle.  From the very beginning in choosing which materials to encompass all the way to how the products are disposed of or re-used.

several other strategies that we must be mindful of in order to be ethical and sustainable is the reduction in parts where possible, green material selection, alternative end of life strategies such as repair or upgrade and overall energy efficient design.  We are reminded that it is important to understand that we must not just be mindful of these strategies but we must be vigilant enough to incorporate them in all aspects of our designs.     

We must also have a good sense of which strategies are to be implemented where appropriate, to refrain from doing more harm than good, which would defy the whole purpose of trying to be greener.  For example reducing materials in products which are intended to be repaired at end of life, which may in fact require the product reach that stage faster.

Weekly Consultation Reflection 12/08/13

This week I further strengthened my research into the effects and symptoms of arthritis particularly in the hand and the rest of the body,  a common symptom many suffer from as a result of osteoarthritis is dry mouth.

Feedback form Mar :  There are concerns with the tablets being in such close proximity with water, and some concerns with the user being willing to refill the tablet container.

Feedback from Ryan Go & Ben Ma : There may be issues with oxidisation, and reinforce the sealing method so no liquid can seep in or out.

Action Plan for week ahead : Continue to refine concepts and build mockups to test the visibility of these concepts.  To Further develop research into the condition.  Look into possibly another method of dispensing the sterile tablets to make it easier for users who posses arthritis.

Weekly consultation Reflection 05/08/13

This week I did extensive research into the causes and effects of arthritis.  The most common forms of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.  currently there is no cure for arthritis, but there are many ways to manage and treat the symptoms that come with the condition.  There are specific medications that help to target and relieve the symptoms of arthritis.

Feedback From Mar : The designs should encompass new forms of innovation,  the pill dispenser was the most appropriate concept, where it simplified the users actions of obtaining the pill required by the user.  the concept needed more refinement in the mechanism

Feedback From Christine Chau & Daniel Foo:  The dispenser for the gel had massive potential as current products in the market that target joint inflammation are specifically for sport injuries, thus the packaging aren't necessarily arthritis friendly

Action Plan for upcoming week :  I plan to further develop my research in the symptoms and effects of arthritis and especially how those with the conditions are affected in their everyday lives, and how they are handicapped.  I also plan to further strengthen my concepts.
