Project 3 : Sense of Place

Ivoka Bench Rationale

The Ivoka chair is a combination of benches and bike racks integrated into one, it is a modular set, where parts may be added and subtracted.  The benches aim to create a sense of place in the Hurstville station reserve, and to encourage the community to proudly use the space provided.  The reserve is located next to the train station and opposite the bus depot, the lack of activity and seats provided means that the reserve is unused and almost neglected.  In the photos provided we are able to see that there is quite a large amount of negative and unused space.  We are also able to see that the bike racks located on the ramp which connects the reserve and the train station are inadequate, which means that people end up tying their bikes to the hand railings, which may pose as a OHS issue and obstruct citizens such as the elderly who require the hand railings.  The Ivoka Benches aims to bring people together and utilize the space provided, as well as create efficient bike racking.
